National Park Rules

When traveling to the Galápagos Island, you must remember that this is a National Park that requires all visitors to be respectful of the environment. While you are visiting the Islands, all visitors are expected to abide by the following National Park Service rules:

  1. All visitors must be accompanied by a Galápagos National Park Service (GNPS) authorized guide.
  2. All visitors must only travel on an authorized tour and/or with boat operators allowed to work in the protected areas of the Galápagos.
  3. All visitors must remain on marked trails and respect signs for your safety and the protection of wildlife.
  4. All visitors must maintain a 6-foot distance from wildlife to avoid disturbing the wildlife.
  5. Avoid feeding wildlife as this will result in health complications.
  6. When taking photos of the wildlife, all visitors must refrain from using flash photography. In addition, any photography or videos used for commercial purposes must be approved by the GNPS.
  7. All visitors must request authorization to camp in the Islands as it is only allowed in a few areas. This request must be completed at least 48 hours in advance.
  8. All visitors are required to fully cooperate with all inspections and quarantine officials to preserve the environment. In addition, the visitor is prohibited from introducing food, animal, or plant life.
  9. It is illegal to purchase any products or souvenirs made from the following substances: black coral, lava rock, native wood, vegetation, or shells.
  10. To maintain and preserve the environment, it is important to practice “leave-no-trace” principles.
  11. Trash must be disposed of/recycled in the populated areas or on tour boat.
  12. Campfires and/or smoking is prohibited.
  13. Fishing is allowed on GNPS authorized boat tours.
  14. It is not permitted to practice motorized aquatic sports and/or activities in the National Park or Marine Reserve.
